7 Things You Should Know Before Upgrading or Installing LEAP Office 10

1. LEAP follows strict server and desktop regulations.

As an experienced software development company, the team at LEAP have developed strict specifications for the hardware and software platform that LEAP runs on within your office. LEAP is a powerful tool, and the amount of processing that happens behind the scenes to keep your legal firm running efficiently warrants using up to date, compatible servers, switches and desktops.

Some firms are caught out by purchasing equipment before checking the LEAP specifications and find themselves requiring further upgrades or replacement of machines.

Talk to I Know IT® who specialise in the appropriate hardware and software to find out what your firm needs to meet LEAP’s standards.

2. LEAP is not “cloud compatible”

LEAP is designed to run on a server within your office premises and is not a cloud compatible software – a system which is gaining popularity amongst many products. Whilst this may change in the longer term, you will need to have a server of your own running LEAP from your office.

If you have multiple offices you can run what is called a Terminal Server at one office and make this the main “hub” for all of your LEAP users to connect to.

3. Mac, iPad and iPhone are not supported

LEAP does not run on Apple devices. In very special circumstances through the support of an IT professional you may be able to run a “virtual Windows machine” to run the LEAP software. This type of configuration is not supported by LEAP but is possible in very unique circumstances where Mac is an essential part of your firm.

4. Running the LEAP “server software” from a desktop is very risky

The minimum specifications for LEAP advise that you can run the software from a desktop machine. The reality is most desktop computers do not have the essential hardware such as redundant storage and backup controllers to prevent you having major issues with LEAP. This is true for almost any server based software.

The best practice is to install LEAP on a professional, commercial grade server.

5. You still need to backup up your LEAP Software

There are so many different backup methods used today. The great thing about LEAP is that all of your company’s professional information is stored on the LEAP Server, which in technical terms means that your data is centralised.

To back up the data, the most effective way is to use a disk imaging product, eg. StorageCraft, Acronis and Livestate. All of these products take an image of your LEAP software, and in the event that your systems fail, are stolen or become damaged in any way, the image can be restored – either back to the same server if possible, or to a new system.

Backups should always be kept offsite in a safe place with an individual you can trust, no matter what.

6. You need a fast network and a reliable Internet connection to run LEAP efficiently

The LEAP software transmits thousands of packets of information from your server to your desktop computers, and also downloads important updates from the Internet which need to be installed on your LEAP server. This information is important and secure.

In order to get the necessary updates and run LEAP effectively we recommend a Gigabit network connection and at least an ADSL2+ internet connection for your office.
